Typical Nigerians

Figure 1 Typical Nigerians

‘Warri no dey carry last’. A slang that has turned into a motivational anthem for every Nigerian. The typical Nigerian soars high like an Eagle and has the fighting spirit of a Dragon. In defeat, there is always hope for redemption because of the zeal, determination, gusto, and resilience shown at all times.

Despite the socio-economic challenges and misinterpretation on the international stage for crime, fraud and other problems, our athletes have made it a point of duty to redeem our image.

The successful Nigerian athletes like Anthony Joshua, Ese Brume, Tobi Amusan, Victor Osimhen, Asisat Oshoala, Aruna Quadri, and Israel Adesanya help presents us to the world as a people with immense and ever growing talent, will, strength, courage and wealth.

Consequently, their achievements have also ignited hope, joy, pride, and redemption for many who could only identify as one Nigeria irrespective of the demographic of these athletes.

Ese Brume’s consistency, preparation, and continuous proof of amazing display has earned her the biggest laurels on the international stage. Her Olympic and World Championship medals put her in a worthy place for national and international honours as a result of her qualities.

She was recently awarded a scholarship grant to fund her university education.

Tobi Amusan’s historic World Hurdles Championship feat depicts the resilient and persistent nature of Nigerians. She was discouraged early because of her height, lack of training facilities and support from her father. Tobi has grown in leaps and bounds since then with a plethora of records and titles.

These athletes have achieved so much by investing their time into doing what they love. With a continued show of resilience, we can achieve much more like our Nigerian heroes.

Just as the famous line of the Nigerian national anthem ‘The labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain’, the labour of our heroes of today is also a source of inspiration and shows that the sky is definitely the starting point for us as Nigerians

Truly, ‘We no dey carry last’. We will never give up because failure is never an option for a typical Nigerian, it’s success all the way.

Anthony Joshua has always shown the Nigerian spirit. His comeback from the loss to Ruiz Jr. tells the tale of our strength as Nigerians. Even how he acts in defeat in a way mirrors a true Nigerian. We are always ready with a comeback for every question or inferred lack.

Asisat Oshoala is currently one of the best players in the world. Her parents were not supportive when she dropped out of school to pursue a football career but against all odds became the first ever African Ballon D’Or Feminine nominee.

The record 5-time African best player award winner is the first African to play in the English Women’s Super League, win the BBC Women’s player award, and UEFA Champions League.

She has gone on to open an academy to support and inspire young girls.

Victor Osimhen is currently one of the most sought-after players in the world. He is skillful and scores a lot of goals every season even after recovering from injuries. The pain is never a reason to stop, it shows how much more can be achieved through it all. Osimhen grew up selling sachet water on Lagos traffic but never gave up on his football dream.

Israel Adesanya has always attributed his winning culture to his home country. His pride, swagger and self confidence reeks of everything people love and hate about us. When a Nigerian walks into a room, they need no introduction.

Aruna Quadri has never ceased to develop his passion in table tennis and has remained relevant in the space, through perfection. It has earned him a legendary status as a Nigerian in table tennis. He is the first and only African to rank top 10 in the world. Injuries and several hours of hard work have never affected Aruna’s determination to succeed.
